What are Website Backlinks?
A Brief History of Backlinks / Inbound Links
There was a time when Search Engine Optimization was easy and ranking well on Google was just a matter of placing a few keywords in your keywords tag, then making sure they where on your page, everywhere. Webmasters would stuff they're pages with keywords and over-abuse them in page copy to appear more important to Search Engines.
Well Google and others caught on to this quickly and devised they're own ways to handle this problem. The best idea, devised by Google was a measurement of other websites that link to yours, via inbound links. They figured most brand new websites that don't really "deserve" to rank yet would have to proove themselves to Google. They would do this by showing them that they are a great site and others think so too, thus they would link to them (give them a website backlink) and want to share the site with others who visit they're site. This is a true, real life "Word Of Mouth" on the internet.
Google gives value to not only Backlinks from other websites themselves but also the "Anchor Text" used to make the website backlink. So if your website sells shoes and you are trying to rank well for the search term "shoes", you should try to have other websites give you a backlink with the word "Shoes" as the link text.
There have been many methods that webmasters have used to spoof the search engines from Recipricol Linking(which is easy to detect and stopped working years ago), to 3-Way Inbound Linking which doesn't work anymore as well.
Why 3-Way Linking Doesn't Work
Soon after Backlinks became a major influence of top rankings on Google, savvy webmasters devised plans to spoof Google and other Search Engines by forming inbound link partners and networks that would appear natural. A 3-Way inbound link scheme works like so, there are 3 groups, Group A, Group B, and Group C. Group A links to Group B, Group B links to Group C and finally Group C links to Group A. Every site gains a one-way backlink, without reciprocating. The problem is that Google can catch on very easily, this system creates a Loop, a circle that Google can detect. Once detected rankings will slowly decay and be very hard to regain.
